چکیده

2014 Starting with the Flory theory for one long flexible polymer chain of N segments in a homopolymer melt of shorter (P segments) chains, we employ scaling arguments to construct the « phase diagram » of an athermal bimodal solution, i.e. a ternary system composed of N chains, P chains, and solvent. Qualitatively the presence of short chains reduces the effective solvent quality as experienced by the long chains. We present limiting forms for the radii of gyration of both chains through out the « phase diagram ». J. Physique 42 (1981) 1045-1051 JUILLET 1981, Classification Physics Abstracts 36.20C 61.40K

Estimation of the Molecular Weight Distribution of Linear Homopolymer Blends from Linear Viscoelasticity for Bimodal and High Polydisperse Samples

This work is concerned with the approximate solution of the problem generated by the integral of first kind relating the shear relaxation modulus of entangled, linear and flexible homopolymer blends and the molecular weight distribution (MWD). Procedures are proposed to estimate the density distribution function (DDF) of the MWD from numerical solutions of the theoretical model composed by the ...

Dispersity and spinnability: Why highly polydisperse polymer solutions are desirable for electrospinning

We develop new criteria that describe the minimum concentration limits controlling the spinnability of dilute and semi-dilute flexible polymer solutions with high molecular weight and varying polydispersity. By asserting that the finite and bounded extensional viscosity of the solution is the key material property determining the stability of a filament during spinning, we propose a new scaling...

Non-linear dynamics of semi-dilute polydisperse polymer solutions in microfluidics: A study of a benchmark flow problem

The complex flow behaviour of semi-dilute (15 < c/c < 22.5) polydisperse polyethylene oxide (PEO) aqueous solutions flowing through a planar microfluidic geometry with an 8:1:8 contraction–expansion is systematically studied. The molecular weight and distribution of the PEO samples are analysed by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). Full rheometric characterizations using various techniques in...

Polydisperse polymer networks : elasticity, orientational properties, and small angle neutron scattering

2014 The properties of polymer networks may be expected to depend upon the distribution, f(S), of chain lengths between crosslinks. We develop a formalism for treating phantom networks which allows the explicit inclusion of an arbitrary f(S) distribution. In bimodal networks we investigate chain orientation in the strained network by calculating P2(cos ~)> and P4(cos ~)> for the long ...

Infrared Dichroism and Surface Conformational Dynamics of Adsorbed Poly(dimethylsiloxane)

We examined polymer conformations at a strongly adsorbing solid surface and their evolution with elapsed time during the adsorption process. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS: Mw ) 118 000; Mw/Mn ) 1.16) was allowed to adsorb onto oxidized germanium from dilute carbon tetrachloride solutions. The mean backbone orientation was found to change even after the mass adsorbed had saturated; its conformati...
